Kali Uchis released the video to her single, “Only Girl” from her untitled upcoming album a few months ago. I am sharing this now because it just needs to be appreciated. Video below.For those who don’t know, Kali Uchis is this really amazing artist from Virginia via Colombia. She has this Amy Winehouse-like (even though I hate using that comparison) sound, while also staying close to her Colombian roots. She also dresses like she’s in the wrong decade, as if she was sent here from the 1960’s. She’s so cool though and is a breath of fresh air for the music industry. Early on she caught the attention of Snoop Dogg and Tyler the Creator, which lead to having a few songs with the latter. Her mixtape Por Vida was my soundtrack for at least 6 months. It’s one of the best pieces of work I’ve heard in a while. So go check that out.
Anywho, her latest video for “Only Girl” features Steve Lacy and Vince Staples. Steve Lacy is the guitarist from my favorite band, The Internet. He is featured on the chorus and he really makes it flow, giving the chorus an old school approach and feel. It’s almost like a duet plus Vince Staples. Vince Staples gives us a verse at the end and completes the song effortlessly. Great first single by Kali, now I’m ready for the album 🙂
